I personally can't because that was often enough to get people to be insulting. If I didn't humble or insult myself, plenty of people did it for me. It sucks, but you learn your reactions based on how everyone acts to you, and artistic communities are often harsh and full of bullying. Most people leave to do other things because of that.

I fully agree that it's a bad, annoying habit, but that doesn't mean it's an easy one to break.
