Just because something is an original/non-fandom based story, doesn't automatically mean it's going to be the best and most perfect thing since sliced bread and can openers. Same goes for fic (or tie-in/expanded universe material, which I lovingly call 'professional fan fic') involving characters/concepts/places we're familiar with.

tl;dr: Sturgeon's Law is in full effect going both ways.
