while there's no excuse for being a dickhead, and that there are lots of them in paris, you have to understand that it's the most visited place in the world, and that means people working and living there usually don't have the time or the patience to help you out. they're just trying to go to work, or go home, and they don't feel like accommodating tourists. also, a lot of them are ashamed of their bad english and don't have the motivation to speak in anything but french.

When my dad and I visited Paris, people thought we were just from another part of France because my dad's accent tends to mutate depending on who he's talking to. He usually sounds more Québécois, but he was like: "No, I must speak like the locals!"
And I went to French school up until 10th grade so my accent also tends to be French rather than Québécois. We were almost like chameleons, lol.

It rather sounds like they should either suck it up or move. Paris is far from the only major tourist city in the world, and yet New Yorkers, Londoners, Romans, and many others manage to be polite and helpful as a rule.

I don't think anyone mentioned the issue of speaking in French? Certainly it seems to me that any tourist complaining about someone speaking their native language is the dickhead, not the other way round.

Aren't New Yorkers kind of famous for being jerks to tourists, though

Oh, no way. I've heard that before, but I've been to NYC four times now? And I've met so many friendly, polite people there.

Like when my friend and I were talking about what stop to get off on the subway to see this one tourist site, a stranger politely corrected us because we would've gotten off at the wrong one. And that guy who helped carry my luggage up the stairs, and another person who randomly offered to throw out my empty food container at a hockey game when I stood up in the aisle so he could pass by. Plenty of nice conversations with lots of people, too.

DA here has been to NYC a few times as well and found it to live up pretty well to the stereotype of being full of jerks.

I try to be really nice and respectful when I travel, so maybe that's why I tend to get good reception.

We met some cops who seemed pretty incompetent, though?

I'm sorry, anon, but...I think you must be doing something wrong.

Yeah, people in Manhattan were nothing but helpful to me when I needed it and pleasant otherwise.

Yeah, I've never had bad experiences there before either. But then again I've never had any experiences with rude people in Paris either. It's just kind of funny seeing new yorkers being cited in that context I guess, since it's ultimately silly to judge a whole city anyway

I've never had that experience when in NYC. On the contrary, everyone I've encountered has been nice and more than happy to help.

New Yorkers tend to be polite and helpful to tourists as a rule? LOL...
