So, there was some wank in my small fandom the other day and it seems to have shut down the good part of the fandom and caused a person I was trying to become fandom friends with to take a break for a while.

I'm really mad about it because I think I may have been the catalyst as I was posting about a very problematic character (my favorite character, and a well liked character in the fandom) without properly examining each of his heinous acts and comparing them to real life atrocities, etc., etc. It was basically a bunch of angry kids who seem to parrot sj concepts while having no idea what they are talking about and take fictional characters too seriously and shit on new fans of this character. I didn't get involved in the wank (aside from it being my posts being reblogged and snide comments added) but now I'm sad because I liked that fandom a lot and now everyone's all sore and upset. :(

Anyone else have some wank happen in their fandoms that upset them?

I used to be in Hetalia fandom (not anymore for reasons unrelated to this tale of wank.) A while back, I think a couples years now (?) some morons were doing a cosplay thing and were wandering around some town somewhere and decided to take photos of themselves doing the Nazi salute near a Holocaust memorial and then post said photos online. It was pretty awful and got attention from people outside of fandom and caused a HUGE ruckus in the fandom with people going WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU THIS IS WHY PEOPLE DISLIKE OUR FANDOM, Hetalia fandom having already garnered something of a reputation for making light of serious events and being culturally and/or historically insensitive/illiterate. I think the people involved made some kind of apology, but it was still a sore spot for quite some time.

*headdesk* I was a lurker on SF_Drama for awhile (Left when the more radical SJWs really took control of that comm), and I saw that show up in a few posts on that comm.

And yeah, it's things like that and writing shippy fic after a tragedy (like the recent Santa Barbara shootings), is part and parcel why people are very hesitant to even watch/read Hetalia, to say nothing about even dipping a toe in the fandom.

I was in a fandom years ago where a shipper war got so intense that people started making attempts to hack one another's fansites. One of them actually succeeded, and everything blew up, and it became nigh impossible to just talk about the show in a general sense. Like, you weren't allowed to talk about certain characters or certain episodes or even an entire fucking season depending on where you went. It was really, really awful.

Oh wow. That's some hardcore warring. Thankfully, this didn't get that bad (this time, but I heard it did in the past). What's the point on being fandom if you can't talk about things?

Mishapocalypse. Goddamn, guys, it was a one-shot April Fool's prank. It may have been overdone, but nobody was being bullied or hated on. All anybody was trying to do was have fun with a stupid meme, and it was all over by the next day.

I can understand folks being annoyed if they weren't into it, but unfollowing people or quitting Tumblr or claiming they were being attacked somehow? Sheesh.

*before you ask, no I'm not in the Supernatural fandom, and only hear about wank about it through other venues like Fandomsecrets.

It's cool. Somebody found a slightly creepy-looking shot of Misha Collins, and a lot of people changed their Tumblr icon to it (for the day, mostly,) or photoshopped it into various images a la Shocked Patrick and posted and reblogged them all over the place.

Again, I can understand why it would annoy people, especially if they're not in the SPN fandom, but the backlash was totally out of proportion IMO and went on much longer than the joke itself.
