Game Theory. It was originally a sequel character study spin-off of some original characters from the author's Rise of the Guardians fanfics, but grew into its own fantastic fairy tale story. It's sequel, The Court of Five Thrones, just started.

The original Rise of the Guardians fanfics (From the Darkness We Rise and Into Shadows We fall) are also very good. That said, Game Theory and the Fae tales series makes very little mention of them, and the author is reformatting the entire thing to have no fanfic connections/be completely original fic anyway. So if you don't want to read the original fanfic but want to know the context for Game Theory, then the author's new/retooled background story is a short original story, The Nightingale and Tehro the Mouse-Lad. It effectively summarizes the relevant parts of the original fanfics, in the context of original fic and characters instead of fanfiction and pre-existing characters.

That said, pay attention to the warnings on all of them. I am not kidding, these fics are dark as hell and that's at least half their appeal right there.
