What sort of squicks me is he just looks underage to me while he's not.

This comment spurred me to look him up, and...wow, dude's 28? He looks about 16!

Yes, when I looked it up, I was like WTF. I suspected he was older than he looked. But I I'd have guessed he was like 21-22.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-28 01:02 am (UTC)(link)
What exactly is squicky about people looking much younger than they are? I can see finding it startling, but I'm puzzled why you say it sort of squicks you.

Its squicky to me if they play roles intended for adults, I guess. But I realize that's a personal thing.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-28 01:24 am (UTC)(link)
I'm not sure I get it, they are adults playing roles close to their actual age. Adults playing significantly younger(particularly how the actor is almost guaranteed to be an adult if the story is about high schoolers) has always been weird to me, but I don't see anything odd about an adult playing an adult regardless of how they look.

Is it just because their apparent youth is usually never addressed in the movie vs real life where people usually exclaim over it?

I think the point was that mentally he seems like a teen, playing adult roles, even if he's not.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-28 02:09 am (UTC)(link)
That makes sense, but they said specifically that it was actors that looked young so I assume that means physically.

It's more like, actions?

I just find some things more disturbing for minors. Let's say a character is going to put a bullet through someone's head. T me, that scene is quite different if done by a 15-year-old of by a 25-year-old.

It's not quite the full reason, but part of it is "how did you get fucked up so young". In that sense I'm more okay with teen characters who look like adults than vice versa.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-28 01:52 am (UTC)(link)
I'm sorry, I think I'm misunderstanding you because I'm still confused what you're saying.

Do you mean that if a character shoots someone in the head you prefer a 15 year old character played by an adult actor to a 25 year old character played by an actor that looks 15? In that case I'm still not sure why it would matter how old the character looks when their canon age is 15 or 25 respectively.

[personal profile] kallanda_lee 2014-06-28 02:06 am (UTC)(link)
For the first part: yes that's what I'm saying.

As for why it matters: it's specifically when the actor's age looks different from the canon age.

Okay, let's assume I vaguely know the storyline, and know the character is supposed to be 25.

If I see someone who looks 15 playing him, that will emotionally change the scene for me.

(Let's say, for simplicity's sake, I find it more troubling if violence is inflicted either on of by minors).

Now, if I know this is the story, I can choose whether I'm willing to watch it or not.

However, if it's played by a 25-year-old who looks 15, I'll unexpectedly be looking at a scene where is *looks* like a minor

(Anonymous) 2014-06-28 02:51 am (UTC)(link)
Ah, ok, I get it now. You know you're looking at a 25 year old, but your brain is seeing and insisting it's a 15 year old, like one of those two faces or a vase illusions where some people only ever see one even if they know both are there, and makes the scenes too jarring. Thank you for clarifying. :)

He looks like an elf veering into goblin territory.

So, good casting for Spiderman then!

(Anonymous) 2014-06-27 11:12 pm (UTC)(link)
My first thought when I saw the photo: He looks like a cross between Leonardo diCaprio and Harry Styles.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-27 11:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I don't get the appeal, he's hideous. I mean, not nearly as bad as Cumberbatch, but bad enough.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-27 11:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Can't say anything about off-screen, but to me he always looks like a villain pretending to be weak/helpless. All his 'friendly' interactions in Amazing Spiderman and Chronicle looked like duping delight instead of sincere, so I could never believe his characters weren't evil from the second they step on screen.

Like he's trying really hard to grin sheepishly to come off as harmless, but it looks off because he isn't good at hiding how gleeful he is about tricking someone into thinking he's not evil.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-28 02:23 am (UTC)(link)
so you think he's a bad actor paired with an unfortunate brand of permanent bitchface? that's rough.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-28 03:00 am (UTC)(link)
ayrt
Yes and no. Yes in that that's the impression I've gotten from what I've seen, no in that I think his acting would work better if he just played straight-up sociopathic villains. I enjoyed his performance in The Amazing Spiderman 2 the most when he was a desperate business man scheming and manipulating Electro to get what he wanted, not flinching at anyone who got killed if they were in his way.

I can't believe him as a decent guy falling to the dark side, and I did think his Green Goblin bordered into cheezy, but I think he'd be perfect playing a character like Umbridge or a conniving blue collar villain.

i don't mind the way he looks, but i hate the way he talks. everything he says sounds forced and awkward.

The way in which I find him unattractive reminds me of Michael Pitt and I can't put my finger on why.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-28 04:34 am (UTC)(link)
idk, I find him beautiful, but I just have a problem with his choice of movies.
His characters in both In Treatment and Kill Your Darlings were his best, imo, he just fits more in a little psychopathic/messed up/drunk-and-high-24/7 roles. His Chronicle (though a little f-ed up, still a bit too normal) and Place Beyond the Pines characters were my least, not because he didn't act them well enough, but because they just don't suit him as much. I wish he'd be a bit more selective in his roles, because I think he could be great.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-28 07:38 am (UTC)(link)
I think he's beautiful and I've loved him in everything I've seen him in. He's got an almost androgynous, ethereal air about him, which is very much my thing. Also, I just think his face is beautiful. And I dig his body type.
