It's not even about "fault", at least in a fictional context. Tyrion wanted to be loved and respected, by anyone at all, but mostly by a woman. He was still guilt ladden over Tysha and what had happened to her when he was barely more than a child. And he'd just found out that she very possibly had really loved him and that his father had had her raped and murdered.

He knew he'd been fooling himself about Shae. She was a whore. She didn't really love him. But he loved her. He'd hoped that showing her love and protecting her would make her care for him at least a little bit. But in the end, she didn't, and when he came across her he was in a highly emotional state, devastated over what Jaime had told him about Tysha, and Shae was in his FATHER's bed. The man who had destroyed the only woman who had really loved Tyrion.

So while murdering Shae was still obviously wrong, I can understand Tyrion's mindset at the time and I don't hate him for it.

That's fine, I understand where he was coming from too and "doing bad things for understandable reasons" tends to be how a lot of the more controversial GOT characters (Jaime, Theon, Dany, etc.) roll. My issue is with the fandom constantly saying Tyrion was 100% justified in killing her, that he did nothing wrong, or that she deserved it because "baawww she betrayed muh Tyrion". Fact is, she was an uneducated, poor, 18 year old prostitute who was just doing her job (if I were in her position I'd probably do the same thing). We also will never know whether or not she willfully chose to sleep with Tywin or testify against Tyrion, either. It's not black and white for either party involved, yet the fandom keeps making it out to be that way.

Fans on both sides of the issue keep making it out to be black and white. He's not a precious, innocent betrayed woobie, but he's not an evil horrible misogynistic monster, either. He's a messed up guy who did something awful in the middle of a complete psychological breakdown.
