She says she's in rented accomodation, so why on earth isn't her landlord fixing a lot of that? She shouldn't be responsible for fixing the shower, hiring an electrician for the bathroom lights, hiring a plumber for the toilet, sinks and taps.

Being responsible for inside decorating? Yes. Fixing a broken windowpane? Possibly. But unless her landlord is running a slum, s/he ought to step up and get the stuff in the first paragraph fixed at the very least.

I don't know all the details, but it's a rent-controlled apt. and i'm thinking perhaps that she doesn't actually have any power to make the landlord do anything?

I know that people in the States live in places where landlords won't do shite, and since she hasn't the money to just pack up and move.... I don't really know. And, also, Israel, so I have even less knowledge about the laws and rules of renting and whatnot than I do about the ones here.
