Well, I'm glad this series helps you, OP, even if it's with avoiding pointless wank. It is kind of a clever tactic on your part.

But gee, do I wish it had more of a fandom :( If I weren't busy with my main ones, I'd probably do something about it.

I'm also curious as to what fannish space you are in that there's a possibility you'd be "caught up" in wank over classic SH adaptations?? Or are your friends fans of the BBC Sherlock? I suppose that's more likely than a bunch of people frothing at the mouth about the Granada series versus, say, the Soviet one.

You know, I had a comment written, but you said everything I was going to say anyway.

Seriously. The Holmes fandom that isn't BBC-based is generally so cool-headed and respectful, when when we argue. I don't think I've seen any actual wank.

Hmm, I don't know about that, though maybe we just run in different circles; I found the Granada fanbase so unbearably smug (especially the shipping faction, who earnestly believe that the show made Holmes/Watson 100% canon) and defensive that I had to leave it. I guess I'll be sticking with the Canon after all, but even the Canon fanbase has a problem with elitism.

*boggles* We clearly are/were in very different circles, as I know many Granada fans (or at least people who enjoy that show, but are ACD canon fans at heart) and none of them think this. Where was this, if you don't mind me asking? LJ?

I saw this attitude on tumblr, tbh. I legit read long, serious metafiction about how Granada!H&W are canonically queer.

AYRT. Really? I didn't think there was a Granada fandom on tumblr apart from f*ckyeahgranadaholmes, which is good for gifs etc.

A small part of the Granada fanbase IS like this. But tbf, I've never encountered a Granada/canon fan who'd be genuinely disrespectful and rude. Condescending, sure. But not condescending enough to spark serious wank. In comparison to the modern adaptations fans, they are still very chill about it all.

Although it might be partially the fact that I didn't think there'd be anyone to pick up the fight even if some Granada fans were able/willing to start it. I forgot all about Eastern Europe, of course. And I guess there might be... other wank topics I'm unaware of.

I'm sorry about your experience :/ As a fan of both the canon and Granada I know these things can be a huge damper.

Same. The only even mild nastiness I've ever come across in 4 years plus of Holmes fandom was right here, as a matter of fact, and that was an unloading of anon personal bile rather than wank per se.

This version of SH is possibly better known than OP thinks. The old LJ watchlongs a couple of years back featured it from time to time.

It is Soviet VS Granada. They're both kinda disdainful towards BBC.

Oh! Are you or your friends from Russia/Eastern Europe? Then I know what you mean. Many Eastern European Holmesians have a disproportionate hang-up on the Soviet adaptation.

I can only sympathize. You found a good solution, IMO.

ayrt
Thank you! It works so far. Granada has some die hard fans too, so it's about 50/50.

I've never come across any Granada fans who hate on the Soviet version, tbh. Most of them/us adore it.

One doesn't have to hate it, I expect. It is probably the "which adaptation is the best/most faithful" kind of discussion.

So it does. It just never occurred to me that there could be serious fights over that, admittedly. The more you know :(

Re: op

Which, y'know, might have something to do with the fact that BBC creators keep wanking on about how original they are with the "first sexy Sherlock Holmes" and "a Watson who is actually competent for the first time" and carefully damning the others with faint praise, or in the case of Soviet Holmes, pretty much ignoring it, and too many fans following suit...

btw, Gatiss said on youtube, I think it was an interview, that he was inspired by a Private Life of Sherlock Holmes.
