That particular piece of sympathy seems to be more about awareness.

But, yes, there are people who sympathize more with animals, generally pets, than they do with humans (even babies or children). And, yes, for some people, there might be an element of misanthropy. Of course, just because they are able to connect more with the suffering of animals doesn't mean they dislike humans or wish them ill.
