Yeah, not sure I'd go that far either but I think the movies do a better job of showing Thorin as a more well rounded person, if that makes any sense? He seems less sympathetic in the books, if only because you don't get inside his head or see things from his point of view very much.

I think he's a reasonably well-rounded character in the books; it's just that some of what we're shown of him isn't very appealing. His pomposity and self-importance, for instance.

ayrt - Yes, true. But I think the problem lies in the fact that in the books, we aren't shown much that balances that side of Thorin out.
