I'm all for High Concept stories that feature more varied casts.

I honestly wonder if I accidentally rented the wrong movie with the same title with how people talk about Pacific Rim. What I saw was a monster/machine action flick with a few bits of dialogue that pretended to be deep. It felt like a monster of the week movie with a giant budget to me. But then I'm super disillusioned with all the sci-fi and fantasy movies in the past few years. I will acknowledge that Pacific Rim at least did not make me rage about these issues like Into Darkness did.

"High-concept is a type of artistic work that can be easily pitched with a succinctly stated premise. It can be contrasted with low-concept, which is more concerned with character development and other subtleties that aren't as easily summarized."

PR is high concept. "Giant monsters attack the earth. People fight back with robots"

Except, much like Avatar (the one with the blue people, not the other travesty), it felt to me like the point was the cool effects and the underlying "story" was an afterthought.

Pacific Rim was one of the dumbest movies I've seen last year. Sure, all the robot stuff was cool enough to make any 9-year-old squee in delight, but the characters and their interactions were complete crap.
