Tumblr tagging

(Anonymous) 2014-06-30 11:46 pm (UTC)(link)
I saw it argued in one of my fandoms recently that posts about non-can ships don't belong in fandom and character tags because not everyone likes them or wants to see them. The post got a good number of likes and people agreeing and so I'm curious what the consensus is here.

Personally, I disagree. As a multishipper, I like to be able to search fandom and character tags and see a medley of ships. There are ships I wouldn't have found if they weren't posted to the main tags. Plus it leaves people who want to post about ships that don't have their own tag out in the cold if they're expected to stay out of the main tags.

What do you guys think?

Uhm...that's ridiculous. If post contains two characters from a particular show, the fandom and character tags are definitely relevant. If people don't want to see that pairing, they should blacklist that pairing.

Tumblr's so weird about tags. :\a

+1. No reason to get all offended or angry about it. Some people take these things too seriously.

Fandom runs on non-can ships, though? And not everyone likes and/or wants to see canon ships. In fact, there's a lot of hatred for a lot of canon ships. So the argument seems flawed.

No, I'm with you. Tag the ship and the characters in the ship. Tag elitism is ridiculous.

I can kind of understand if the problem was that people were tagging their posts about non-canon ships with the fandom and character tags but without any ship-name tags; then they can't be filtered out, which is an annoyance.

But if the posts about non-canon ships are being tagged, then the other people need to get one of the extensions comradesmiler mentioned, and just block the ship tag.

In my ideal world, fandom wouldn't have any of this shipping nonsense and I could go through the tags without having to deal with it.

But it isn't, so they're as welcomed as anything else that relates to the fandom. Just because people are whiny babies about things that they don't want to see but are related to the tag, doesn't mean you have to listen. If you want to be extra nice add a "non-canon ship" tag or something.

I disagree whole-heartedly. You are limiting peoples ability search of you don't tag characters and fandoms. I don't even tag pairings for the most part, just the fandom. The only thing I don't what to see in a tag is character hate.

Haha, I remember when the Sherlock got really pissy and whiny about K-pop fans when one of the groups came out with a song called "Sherlock" and everyone tagged it as such.

Tumblr's the worst.

Oh, hey, I remember that. Didn't someone end up posting a bunch of dick pics to the tag just to piss everyone off?

I once saw one of the most obscure pairing fandoms get on another fandom's case because the second fandom had a lore concept with the same name as the ship.

And then someone spammed the Sherlock tag with penises which got both fandoms to freak out. Good times.

I disagree with that and think that it's ridiculous. If it's related to the fandom, then people should have the choice of tagging or not tagging. I know Tumblr is a young demographic, but they should stop acting like little kids who throw a tantrum every time something makes them a bit uncomfortable.

On an unrelated-but-still-Tumblr-tagging note, I'd like to put in a complaint about people not tagging their stuff as NSFW. If it would be inappropriate for a place of business, it's NSFW, and improbably-breasted women in metal bikinis shoving their crotch at the camera do qualify. (There's also that one person who doesn't tag their inflation fetish stuff in any helpful manner, but they're at least not a frequent poster.)

Re: Tumblr tagging

(Anonymous) 2014-07-01 12:37 am (UTC)(link)
Lol yes, I had to unfollow someone because they didn't want to tagged nipples as nsfw because it wasn't when men did it or something.

Re: Tumblr tagging

(Anonymous) 2014-07-01 12:50 am (UTC)(link)
A lot of people stopped tagging nsfw stuff because the tag attracts pornbot followers, I think. I agree with you, though.

Re: Tumblr tagging

(Anonymous) 2014-07-01 01:11 am (UTC)(link)
NSFW is so weird to me, as a label. I'm usually just wondering why the fuck people are looking at it at work, and I think the more detailed warnings (nudity, violence, porn) are more appropriate.

Perhaps their code is compiling?

Re: Tumblr tagging

(Anonymous) 2014-07-01 01:30 am (UTC)(link)
It's kind of a blanket label for all of the detailed warnings. I don't want to see any of them except for some very specific ones that I can manually allow, and most people tag for NSFW but not necessarily for the detailed ones, so I just filter that and the detailed ones out.

Re: Tumblr tagging

(Anonymous) 2014-07-01 01:23 am (UTC)(link)
I don't like seeing some ships in fandom tags, but they have a right to be there. So I just hold my tongue and scroll past them.

I do hate seeing ship/character hate in fandom tags though.

And I also hate people who think they 'own' tags and complain when something shows up in 'their' tag. Please.

If I don't like it, I'll block it or the people spamming it.

Re: Tumblr tagging

I reject the notion that it's anybody else's business what tags anyone uses on their own blog, period. Tracked tags are the Wild West of Tumblr and that is a GOOD thing. If someone wants a safe sanitary experience tailored to their own preferences, they can stay on their own dashboard. That's what it's for.

Tl;dr: Fuck no, tag away. Haters gonna hate.
