I hate Akemi Homura and HomuMado, and I hated them before it was cool Rebellion.

Because I hate the trope where characters whose moral compass revolves around saving one person, at the cost of how ever many other lives, are treated like great romantic heroes doing the right thing. And Homura very much is, in canon and fandom.

I thought it was very romantic, but romance doesn't automatically equate to morals or being healthy god no. That was like, infinitely pedastaling.

I have a feeling you're talking about Madoka and Christa, but I like both of them. I actually like Ymir and Ymir/Christa because Ymir is similar to Homura in only caring about one other person, but unlike Homura, she and the story know it doesn't make her a wonderful person.

I've been over the Perfect Pure Angel Female Character Who Everyone Thinks is Flawless type for a long time now. Super boring.

But yeah, at least everyone knows Ymir is a shithead, including Ymir. I actually like her.

Christa has way more character development in the manga, and is pretty much a subversion of that trope. (I hope that wasn't a spoiler :/)

I'm all caught up on the manga and I still think she is barely a subversion. "I was just pretending to be nice" is only interesting if what replaces it is interesting and that didn't happen. Christa's actions while pretending were still actions and they overshadow anything she's done since because she hasn't done anything, so her angel persona feels more real than her. Her talk with Eren was the only highlight of her "new" self so far and it just made me like Eren more instead (for being Funny instead of Dumb). But I guess you're right that ultimately she isn't that Pure Girl archtype, but the boring stink remains.
