I agree with your first sentence, even though I do enjoy the aspects that people are celebrating. I just don't see why they have to claim that it was the first instance of those things.

It feels similar to another problem I have but I'm apparently in the minority. It bothers me when people take the legitimate issue of the lack of representation of certain groups and exaggerate by saying that there is literally none of it. How about a little acknowledgement for the people who were writing about these things long before representation became such a popular subject of discussion? I don't see why we can't celebrate what's already there while pointing out that there is still a huge disparity.

You're not alone in that. I've been feeling like people have really short memories these days when it comes to media representation. I understand it's mostly that the new generation doesn't watch a lot of the older stuff out there, but still.
