I think I understand what OP is saying. A huge part of Legolas and Gimli's friendship is that it's a major milestone in Dwarf/Elf relations, a point where years of hostility and conflict culminates in two very different people forging a deep and lasting friendship. Through his companionship with Legolas and the quality of his character, Gimli's a very significant character: Galadriel gifts him with three of her golden hairs, and Gimli was the first Dwarf to go to the Undying Lands.

Meanwhile, the whole Kili/Tauriel thing is an invention by Peter Jackson for reasons. It's cute, but it does tend to undermine the significance of Legolas and Gimli's friendship.

Well, Kili and Tauriel are probably going to end up dead before anyone knows about their relationship, so to the world at large, Gimli and Legolas will still be known for breaking down the Elf/Dwarf hatred-fest.

Haha, this is true.

They're not even a relationship at this point. They each have crushes they both think can never happen. Kíli may even have a crush on Tauriel's soul-form and not understand that's Tauriel's soul he saw.
