Book Club Thing

[personal profile] peablossom 2014-07-01 11:31 pm (UTC)(link)
So, despite the fact that it's not happening, I have ridiculous questions about The Golem and the Jinni and figured maybe someone else read it/would have equally ridiculous answers for me, or other things to discuss.

Spoilers for the book follow:

My question is, how did the Jinni manage sexing up human ladies? We get told that he still can't handle water, he steams when he gets caught out in the rain. And vaginas are not exactly known for being dry. At least not when things are going as enjoyably as they evidently did with Sophia. You'd think that, seeing as the penis is full of sensitive nerve endings, he would have been in serious, serious pain during the entire act.

On a less 'why am I worrying about this' level, I really enjoyed the book. It was excellent and gorgeous.

So is it officially "Not Happening" or is it just that the guy running it is bad with keeping dates?

Somebody posted a message a couple weeks ago for the_missing_y saying that he wasn't going to be able to do it, and he hasn't been around at all since.

So, who knows? But probably someone will need to take over if we want to keep it going forward.

From what his friend posted, it...kind of sounds like he's been arrested and jailed.

My impression was more 'serious mental health issues' or something (god forbid) more serious like a suicide attempt, or something.

But yeah, pointless to speculate but it didn't sound good.

The friend sounded a bit too hostile about the situation for me to think it was that. :-/

Shit, really? What for? What did his friend say?

I found the post:

"Arrested" is how it read to me, but feel free to draw your own conclusions. Whatever happened, though, it sucks and I hope he's okay.

Could be, but I think I have to side with anon above me. "Done something stupid" and "Selfish" could be addict talk, but it reads as suicide to me. Particularly how it ends with "Micheal's Friend" Still obvious affection, just frustration and hurt in the rest of the comment.

I really hope that it wasn't. :(

I feel bad peablossom that we're all just talking about the_missing_y.

That's a good point and something I hadn't even thought of. Maybe there's something about his human form, that I dunno...sheathes his dick in water-resistant coating? Or maybe he likes pain during sex (he does like it to be exotic, after all)?

But yeah, I really liked it overall, too. It was very interesting exploring such different perspectives (especially Chava's. I really enjoyed the process of her learning how to appear human, and, well...just learning what it is to be alive and in the world). It's also one of the only books where the omniscient POV actually worked for me. I usually like limited third person and don't like omniscient, but I think it was done very well in this case.

I usually prefer limited 3rd person as well, but this novel made omniscient work for it. I also usually don't care for extensive flashbacks, but all the backstory was very compelling here.

Did they ever specify it was penetrative sex? I suppose she could have given him a handjob, though I'm not really sure how he would've taken care of her. Maybe it's only water, not "all fluids"? Saliva didn't seem to be a problem, nor did blood, so I'm guessing bodily fluids didn't hurt him. Either that or he used some sort of magic, I guess.

Personally I was sort of underwhelmed by it, considering I'd heard such great reviews, but it was still a nice read!

She got pregnant by him, so I assume there was p in v sex. I thought about the bodily fluids thing, as well, except that the fetus died in her womb, and it's assumed it was because of the watery nature of her body.
