Lilly said in an interview that it wasn't in the original screenplay, it was wedged in as a studio mandate during reshoots, so I imagine Walsh and Boyens frantically trying to find spaces to tack it in.

It was the love triangle that was tacked in during reshoots - Lilly said she was told about the relationship with Kili was talked about when she was first offered the role and her first day filming was spent on the healing ceremony.

And where is this "studio mandate" thing coming from? The only time the love triangle's addition has been talked about, Boyens happily took credit for it. There has been no discussion of the studio meddling in the films apart from fans saying the love triangle was the studio's fault.
