I've gotta go find that show and watch it because from what I've heard about those two they totally sound like a pairing I would love!
But yes, it's more obvious when you see all those looks back to back...you're right, I don't think he ever even looked at Catherine that way.
I didn't mind Catherine at first, but towards the end I really didn't like her...I guess my dislike of the actress was bleeding over, and I just wanted her to go away (which maybe isn't fair, but...oh well). And I agree that her relationship with Steve definitely seemed forced. At times it sometimes seemed like she was only there so they could say 'see, Steve's totally straight!' (which didn't work lol). I think you're right that she was definitely more invested in the relationship than he ever was...I do see where maybe he loved her as a friend and cared about her, but I never got the sense that he had actual romantic feelings for her or saw it going anywhere long-term.
Again, I agree that he loves Danny more than pretty much anyone else in his life. As far as whether or not he's into guys, honestly I could see him being bi or even gay (I mean, being in the military it's totally possible that he's always liked guys and just kind of refused to acknowledge that possibility). Or who knows, maybe he's had relationships with guys in the past? I know I sound insane at this point, but as far as I can remember, the only people he's seemed even remotely as interested in as he is in Danny have also been guys (there was that one Navy friend who died who I thought it seemed like he maybe had feelings for at one point, and I think there was at least one other where the vibe was similar). I mean, aside from Catherine (and like we've said, he didn't even seem that into her) I can't remember him ever showing any romantic interest in a woman. Plus there have been a few times where there were attractive women around and Danny was clearly interested in them, but Steve completely ignored them to flirt with Danny and even seemed jealous that Danny was paying attention to them. And then there's that time where they were mistaken for a couple by that college girl and Danny was the one that was bothered by it and Steve was only annoyed because she thought they were old enough to have a kid in college. So along with thinking it'd be more likely that Steve would be the one to have romantic feelings, I think he would also be the one more likely to be into guys. But even if not, I also think Danny would be an exception for him.
Thanks for suggesting that! I've used those types of sites before (although I don't think that particular one) but I hadn't even thought of doing it for this. I'll have to download it!

I feel like Steve just kind of went along with Catherine because he was lonely and didn't want to turn her down. And maybe he found her attractive and that was enough for him, but once he saw she was feeling more serious about their relationship he wanted to back out but couldn't bring himself to hurt her. Their relationship feels really, really unbalanced.
...You've blown my mind with the idea that Steve could be gay or bi. I think bi might make more sense in canon, but honestly we did have an entire discussion about how Steve just doesn't seem that into Catherine, so...maybe he could be in denial? Or maybe he is truly bisexual and even has a preference for men, occasionally likes women but connects with men easier. I think either would work in the context of the show, because now that you've said it...I don't think he has shown much interest in women. Even that time the hot girls pulled up besides Danny and him on the road, he looked, then focused on Danny and smirked at Danny's reaction before driving away. He totally does seem more interested in Danny's reaction to women (jealous or otherwise) than the women themselves.

I feel like I need to rewatch the series with this thought in mind. Or just watch a lot more fanvids. Maybe both.

I think at first when it was more of a friends with benefits type thing he thought it was fun but then it was obvious that she wanted more and it kind of seemed like he was pulling away. I mean, there were a couple times where she seemed to totally disappear for an episode or two and he wouldn't seem to even notice (outside of the show I'm sure it was probably for contractual reasons, but within the show you could interpret it as him starting to lose interest in the relationship). And of course it doesn't necessarily even mean anything, but I'm thinking of when he had tickets to that football game (I think it was a football game, anyway) and was supposed to go with Catherine but went with Danny instead. It probably wasn't supposed to have any deeper meaning but it came across (at least to me) as yet another example of him not really being all that interested in Catherine, and ultimately, basically choosing Danny over her.
It's hard to really say I think he's one or the other because I think it could go either way, but it (him being into guys) is something I've always had in the back of my mind, and there have been so many little things that have just added up to make it seem more likely. On the one hand, you could say he obviously was attracted to Catherine on some level (even if it was just sex and he didn't want a serious relationship) which would point towards bi. But then on the other hand you could say he's gay and in denial, and was just trying to prove to himself he was straight with Catherine, which obviously didn't work. So I think either could fit, depending on how someone chooses to interpret it. But either way, I do think he seems to connect more with guys, and I don't think he seems all that interested in women. The girls in the car was one of the examples I was thinking of...he was more interested in messing with Danny by driving away than checking out the girls. And there was at least one other time (I think it was the thing with the Victoria's Secret models but I may be getting that scene confused with another one) where Danny couldn't take his eyes off the girls in lingerie or whatever, but Steve just didn't seem the slightest bit interested in them.
So I don't know. Everything combined just makes me go 'hmmmmm...'
I totally want to rewatch the series now too! And definitely let me know if you come across any good fanvids, I'd love to see them!

I think I get what you're saying, yea. And that time they all dressed up, wasn't it for a benefit or something? I seem to remember Steve bringing Catherine then hanging around Danny the entire night. Wouldn't even be surprised, really. I think in all situations he would choose Danny over Catherine, or pretty much anyone tbh.
Ooo, now I want to go back and watch the Victoria's Secret episode to check. I think you're probably right though, didn't Steve get irritated when Danny kept checking out the models and wanted to stay behind to question them? When you add all this together it starts to look like he is indeed gay, or at least in love with Danny and jealous as fuck.

Probably! That kind of thing's happened so many times it's hard to keep them all straight!
I think it was that one, but it could've been another episode. But whatever episode it was, that's pretty much how I remember it...Danny checking out women and Steve seeming annoyed by it. And when you combine it with all the other stuff, it really does make it seem like he's gay and in love with Danny.

And I told you! Plus the whole thing about Danny ties...especially when Steve is in prison and he says Danny looks good without the tie, he gives him the filthiest look. And the look on his face when he's watching Danny and Grace is adorable and so loving. Plus...did you see how Kono looked at them when they couldn't stop touching each other? She knows what's up! If O'Loughlin isn't playing Steve like he's in love with Danny I'll eat my hat. (Not that I even own a hat, but okay, I'd eat one if I had it. I'm that confident that he's doing it purposefully because how could he not, look at this face. Steve has never looked at anyone else like that.)

Seriously! Every time I started thinking he was playing it that way on purpose, I started thinking I was just imagining things and there was no way, but then I'd see another episode and there would be more of those looks and I'd start thinking it again, lol. You're right that he doesn't look at anyone else that way, though...it just really does seem intentional.

I've said this before, but I just feel like Steve isn't hardwired for romance. Romance and relationships of a romantic nature do not seem to come naturally to him, and he doesn't even seem particularly interested. So I kind of see it as Danny taking him by surprise, because I can believe that Steve is attracted to him (as Steve has been attracted to others in the past, but it's probably been mostly physical) but more importantly totally in love with him. He adores Danny, simply in the context of the show, not even trying to make their relationship slashy. He's like the most important thing in Steve's life. I feel like his relationship with Danny progressed naturally and that it probably blindsided him, so maybe that's why he's in so much denial; he never thought he could feel that way about anyone.

I can see that, too, actually. I actually read a similar fic once, where he wasn't really interested in romance, until he realized he was in love with someone, except in the fic it was Catherine instead of Danny. And that could actually even be another explanation for why he was with Catherine despite not seeming all that into in her...not because he was hiding being gay (although I still think that's a possibility as well) but because maybe he felt like he "should" (like maybe people would think it was weird if a guy his age wasn't in a relationship or something) and it was fine when it was casual but then when it got to the point where she obviously wanted something more serious he wasn't interested anymore (and by that point he had Danny). So yeah, I could totally see what you're saying, where maybe he just never thought he'd want a serious romantic relationship, until Danny came along. And you're right, even within the show and without attempting to make it slashy, Danny's obviously the most important person in his life. And maybe he knows how he feels and just doesn't want to admit it but I could also see him not even realizing it himself and being completely oblivious.

That makes more sense to me than just about anything else. I can buy him just liking sex and wanting a casual relationship, but when Cath started wanting to 'take things to the next level' he didn't seem enthusiastic or comfortable with it. And when Danny and everyone kept calling Catherine his girlfriend he didn't want to place that label on them. He isn't used to or completely comfortable with having a (romantic) partner, I think. Danny is a special case, and he can't really do anything about that because Danny isn't going anywhere, and he wouldn't want him to anyway. So maybe it's just easier not to think about his relationship with Danny because he needs to keep him in his life no matter what, and romance and sex complicate things.

Yes! Casual sex is one thing, but a more serious relationship is something else entirely. And you're right about the calling her his girlfriend thing...as far as I can remember, he never referred to her that way himself, and he seemed uncomfortable when other people did. It totally makes sense, too, that because Danny is so important to him he wouldn't want to risk that relationship, and there are so many ways it could go wrong. If he's in denial or doesn't realize it or whatever, and he acknowledges (even to himself) how he feels, then it could make things awkward being around Danny and given the types of dangerous situations they end up in, a distraction like that would just be an unnecessary complication. If he acknowledges it, and goes so far as to tell Danny how he feels, that would make things weird because he probably figures there's no way Danny feels the same, and that leads to both of them feeling awkward around each other. Or even if by some small chance Danny does return his feelings and they actually end up in a relationship, when it inevitably doesn't work out (and it won't, he thinks, because romance is not something he's good at) that fucks things up, too. And that's not even considering the whole gender issue, if this is the first time he's ever had romantic feelings for a guy, that could be causing all sorts of confusion and complicating things, too. So in his mind it's just better to keep things as they are so he doesn't have to worry about losing Danny.
(Me too! That was the scene that made my dad think they were a couple in this version lol)
