I love Gerard Butler but his singing really was the pits in that movie. :-/

Basically this. Also his make-up, which looked more like a bad case of psoriasis than an actual disfigurement.

I don't think they were brave enough to go with a real level of disfigurement. Certainly not the full Lon Chaney.

There are levels between "skin rash" and "human skull" - they could have done the half-face burn victim look quite easily.

yeah I really wish they'd pushed it really far actually, when it came out I was stoked thinking with the movie budget and film making abilities they could make something amazing, when he's unmasked all I could think was "WHAT is this guys PROBLEM! this is whats making you be a big jerk?! get over yourself!"

Pfft, not even a *bad* case of psoriasis! I have psoriasis and before I got on my current meds, I frequently looked worse in the face than that.

I agree they had chemistry and I'm love a darker, more sex-driven version of the story. But tbh I'd prefer it not to be an incarnation of the ALW one.

How would you envision it, if you don't mind my asking?

I'd see it more as another variation on the story, maybe based more on the book than the musical. I definitely do think there is room for exploring both Erik and Christine more as characters, and to make it more overtly sexual (as opposed to the tension that does already exist in pretty much every adaptation).

Is that the one where Julian Sands puts rats inside his pants?

Yep! I saw this and shrieked "OMG, surprise Julian Sands!" (...I've had a crush on him for 13 years, and he was my inspiration to get into acting.)

I'd like this idea (tho I've never seen the sex and nudity one myself) if only because if it had that kind of material, it would have been illegal to hire a 16-year-old to play Christine. I mean, that part is so aggravating to me because even in the original book Christine is 22-24; which also happens to be the lyrical soprano sweet spot. It wasn't like they needed to find someone who even looked 16, they just chose her and wrote it like that, I suspect, as a bit of casting stuntery to make the film look more interesting. (Prodigy singers! People who were 16 back then could get into a relationship with a much older person without it being considered creepy or even weird! etc...)

What we were left with was an unnecessarily young singer in a role that was physically impossible for her. Her instrument was just plain underdeveloped and there was a world of older actresses far better suited to the part.
