I think it relates to the actual gay content on the show, afaik.

But yeah, it's the same dynamic. Not all women who watched say, Queer as Folk, are into slash fic, but there's a significant overlap.

In the sense that the writer of that article and most of the people in the comments had no idea how deep the rabbit hole goes when it was written. As someone who grew up with fandom slash and yaoi since very young, it's like a discussion about how the sky is blue and spits water sometimes.

I think the reasons she stated are also some of the reasons women are so into slash fic, yes. That's not a new thing - there have quite a few things written on the subject specifically relating to slash fic, if you care to wade into the sometimes pit of wank that is aca-fandom.

But basically the 60's are calling this woman and demanding their their 'straight women like gay men' sexual revelation back.
