That doesn't make her headstrong. She's very much a wuss for a lot of the movie.

Again, I disagree. Instead of sticking to her parents while they ate in the beginning, she wandered through the town. While everyone was afraid of No Face, she became his friend.

The thing is that Chihiro is one of the few protagonist who we see develop into a self-assured girl. The rest start that way and stay pretty much the same, and we never get much insight into their actual personalities, or what separates from other similar protagonists.

I agree. I find it hard to empathise with the female leads who are badass from the start.

Chihiro and Sophie from Howl are two ones that it's easier to identify with (though Sophie annoys me at the end by falling for the bad boy, blame the source material).
