lol I've definitely been there. I cried for hours when my kid left for college because I was so worried (not in front of him though....okay, a little bit in front of him). I'm sure your child will be okay though :)

I'm not a parent, but I've totally been the daughter. Ive been on other continents without my parents starting age 16, and honestly I'm still grateful (and amazed) they even let me go.

Thing is, you probably spent all these years trying to raise her/him into a capable young person who can take care of themselves. You're probably always going to worry, but you need to trust in that. Bad stuff can happen, but you can only hope you raised your kid with the right coping mechanisms for it.

And a lot of the time it's just perfectly safe, and nothing happens at all - it's just a great experience.

Yeah, I've always found travelling long distances (especially if I'm seeing new things) by myself to be very exhilirating.

Spawn is driving 600 miles tomorrow to meet one of his guildies, and the two are then going to carpool to spend the weekend at a third guildie's house.

My SO is all "You have to call or text every hour!" ... I'm more "I just want the the phone number and address of the two guildies..." (though in my head I finish that sentence, "... to give to the police.")

How old is the spawn if I may ask?

21, but ... well, my kids will always be my kids, even when they're 30. :p

The reasonable part of my brain knows it'll be okay and they'll all have a blast, but the "what if?" part is still wailing and gnashing teeth and working overtime. (It doesn't help that someone tried to kidnap him when he was a baby: it's like i've been on Yellow Alert ever since.)

He'll probably be completely fine, but I understand your worry.

Yeah ... he was like a year old, in the grocery cart seat. I was paying the cashier when someone just strolled by and took the cart and starting wheeling it toward the exit. I yelled "Hey! That's my kid!" and the guy let go of the cart and ran out the door (and got away of course >.< )

(20 years ago and it still makes me rage. Good thing he ran, because I would have MESSED HIM UP for trying to take my kid.)

I seriously have never heard of that actually happening outside of TV scripts. That's just messed up.

It's understandable. Can they text you every couple hours or so to check in? Also remind them that since it's gearing up for the holiday weekend, not only will traffic be nightmarish but cops will be out in full force, so don't speed. :-}

At least she's not going to Las Vegas for the weekend with the senior boy she insists she isn't dating and a couple of his fraternity brothers.
