Anon from above, the works themselves may not be comparable (though I'm sure opinions vary on that), but it's the idea of "Don't you dare take MY stuff, but don't you dare complain about ME taking somebody else's stuff" that grates.

I think part of the issue is that it's rare for somebody to be able to take official art and claim it as their own. It's normally very well known both in the fandom and without, so people still recognize that the art belongs to the artist. Whereas with fanartists, if art is stolon/shopped many aren't well-known enough for people to know it's theirs.

But yeah, I can see some elements of hypocrisy too.
