I don't understand this comparison. Artists getting upset aboutnindividual piece of often personal artwork being taken, often uncredited and with the editors watermark on top isn't the same as someone streaming the newest episode of Game of Thrones.

SA
Also, I'm pretty sure lots of people would get up in arms about someones fanfic being taken, 'edited' and reposted under another persons name without permission or credit, so I have no idea why fanart is treated so lowly, do people think it takes minimal effort?

I think illegal streaming is by far the worse offense.

Fanart is done for the love of it. A show like GoT, for instance, employs thousands of real people with real life jobs. Taking it illegally is literally putting real people's jobs in jeopardy. Reposting a bit of fanart and stripping the credit from it, while annoying, just doesn't compare.

But apparently this is the minority view? I don't understand why.

It's not "mildly annoying". Someone taking your art, fucking it up, reposting it and not crediting you means that it usually ends up on sites like WeHeartIt, where people will repost this altered version again and again without credit, and this leads to artists, especially on places like Pixiv, to delete their shit.

Watching a Game of Thrones episode privately is nowhere near the same thing.

For a lot of people, streaming is the go-to option because the series aren't shown in their countries. So not watching it at all and streaming it amount to the exactly same thing - no income for the publisher. And a lot of people stream shows to watch the latest episodes and still buy the DVD boxes once they become available.
Also, streaming can be compared to going over to a friend's house to watch the series. You're not paying for it there, either.
