I feel like this could cause more problems than it solved, though. Just moving Uhura means he's going to have to answer for her placement. But moving two people (one of whom is undoubtedly going to be pissed and is going to challenge the change) is going to make things more complicated. I feel like Spock would rather deal with trying to explain why an extra person is onboard the Enterprise rather than why a switch was made.

I suppose it all boils down to how their database is constructed. Does it flag non-matching allocations? If it does then switching around is the only way to square it, if it doesn't then its open.

I'd like to think that he still had to switch someone, if only because the implications could lead to some nice character stuff when confronted with them. Its all a bit blithe to let Uhura get on the Enterprise with no negative consequences, to have someone say "because you wanted a better assignment my [insert name] is dead, it should have been you!" and have her deal with that would really be a nice bit of character growth. It would also show that all those bits of starship kibble in orbit of Vulcan were more than just fancy special effects shots. You know, that there was a weight to it all beyond just the main cast.

That's a good point. I think it could lead to some good character growth. Though I do hope they would emphasize that the situation was Spock's fault to begin with. But it would be nice for Uhura to have a plot line of her own to develop so I see your point there.

Oh I think it is both their faults. They really both ought to have known better. How anyone could be dumb enough not to think that dating your evaluator would not cause ructions when it came to handing out placements is beyond me.
