It surprises me how often this is a sentiment among people. There's a huge difference between creating a wholesale copy of something, and copying something while erasing the visibility of the original author.

When fanartists get up in arms about people editing and reposting their work, it's because the reposter is often the one who gets the credit for the work and the original artist is not mentioned or linked to.

When people pirate things, they are not claiming they made it. They are not distributing it to others in a way that misleads others into thinking they created that thing. Even if credit is not explicitly given, the pirated thing is popular and well-known enough that there is NO CHANCE of there being a confusion. This is definitely not the case with fanartists!

Credit is important. It's the difference between building off of other people's ideas and plagiarism (taking credit for someone else's ideas).

Nah, there are plenty of artists who don't want their art reposted anywhere even if credit is given. It's often about controlling the medium and presentation.

Such artists exist, but I really think most of that is motivated by credit issues and original artist visibility. Some sites do credit, but the credit is very small or hard to find -- it's understandable if artists find other people posting their work there unacceptable, especially when it's just as easy to post a link to the original. When other people repost, people often assume the reposter is posting original content and thank or give comments directed to the reposter. Even if the reposter properly credited, this can be very annoying to the original artist. Most artists I've seen who hate reposting full stop are either young or have bad experiences where people reposted their stuff on some random site without any reference to where it came from. It's really frustrating!
