Hey, you've got to give some credit to JJ Abrams. The changes he made - setting the film in another dimension, changing Kirk's backstory to be a juvenile delinquent, making Kirk and Spock's relationship antagonistic at first, destroying Vulcan (which is a huge thing to do and reverberates strongly through most reboot fic), and bringing Spock Prime into the reboot universe - layered on top of decades of established Star Trek canon are what make reboot fic so exciting. You can argue over the worth and quality of the movie, but I think those changes reinvigorated the fandom because they work within the established canon to make it something very different but familiar at the same time.
