This is the interesting thing about interpretation because to me I always thought she did return his feelings but couldn't admit it because of what happened with Talia and her general difficulty with romantic relationships.

Personally, I think she would have considered dating him if not for her disastrous end with Talia, but I don't think she loved him in a romantic way. I think she felt there was potential, but her feelings didn't go beyond friendship for him.

This is how I felt about Susan and Marcus's relationship. I mean, at the end, when Marcus dies, there's real grief for her not even trying to get close to him.

Exactly. To me it was both grief for losing someone she cared about and about the missed opportunity. She tries to brush it off with her comment about how she should have boffed him, but it read like genuine regret at least on some level.

He didn't exactly die. He was put into cryo. In fact JMS has written a short story that is set a couple of hundred years later when Marcus is revived - it's a very strange story...

I always interpreted it as having the potential to be romantic. She was starting to maybe return his feelings, and maybe if the Talia thing hadn't gone to hell (and the rest of her life hadn't been so devastating), she might have let him. I think if given enough time, she hoped she could let him in. But she is Russian, and her life is tragedy.
