Actually, this is just Toei being cheap again. They know that no matter how little effort they put into the animation of their shows, people will still eat it up.

And they are! Toei was right! Aw man, it's so awesome, hopefully the support this anime gets will send the great message that we are okay with this and totally want more shows made with this kind of heartless, capitalist philosophy in mind. :))))) So much to look forward to.

Ayrt

And it so the cycle will continue. Forever.

Have you watched Crystal yet? What are your thoughts on it? Particularly the animation?
scrubber: Naota from Fooly Cooly (Default)

I didn't even watch Sailor Moon as a kid.

[personal profile] scrubber 2014-07-08 12:58 am (UTC)(link)
I really don't get why people think they are doing themselves any favors by defending sub-par work under the guise of being a "good fan" or supportive or whatever. If you love something don't you want it to be as good as possible? Can you really look at Crystal and say "yep, they definitely did their best, no laziness here". I'm just saying, Korra started sucking at minute one and I knew that, even though ATLA is my favorite animated show of all time.

I thought the writing made up for the sloppy ass animation and art design, and that's why people are even willing to defend it in the first place. The writing is totally fine, don't get me wrong, but it is basically the manga in a script form. People keep pointing that out like it's a neutral detail, but to me that just means that Toei didn't have to make any meaningful decisions, the hard part is over for them. All they have to so is make the panels move and call it a night. Lazy fucks. The directing wasn't particularly amazing, but again, the writing does all the heavy lifting. Takeuchi must have a good sense of pacing in her writing.

One to the animation. I admit I was impressed by the leaked clip of the opening and thought it was pretty good, got my hopes up a little (the transformation knocked my expectations back down again, thank you Lord). I already knew in my heart that the nice animation we saw in the opening was going to show up in the episodes at some point to fully utilize all corner-cutting techniques, but seeing the OP high quality I realized the attacks weren't even that well animated. Pretty good! Not great. They're still going to show up in the episodes though.

I have to admit the designs in all their grotesque-ness might not be that freakish after a couple of episodes. But I'd still insist that Toei is just hurting themselves further by coming up with such detailed, long-limbed designs. You realize that's more money/effort to animate, right guys? That could be going in your retirement fund! What are you thinking. And it shows, Usagi can't even move a limb in a single smooth arc, everything's choppy as hell. This is the first episode. Almost half a shows budget goes into the first two and last two episodes of a season. There is absolutely nothing here that can justify the years of delay, bi-monthly release schedule, or hype. Fuck me.

I don't know how the contempt Toei has for Sailor Moon fans could be made more clear after looking at that transformation sequence. The line of thought here is beyond transparent. They literally sat around in the board meeting and said "what's the most expensive and time-consuming part of this show's production???" The transformation sequences. I'm sure we can fix that. And goddammit all they did. It looks so bad and completely lacks the magic of the old ones, but we did that when we were young men that actually wanted to add something beautiful to the world, now we just want money, so. Magic girl shows... repeat animations every episode. People expect that. People are totally okay with it. And Toei STILL said "fuck it". What does that say about them do you think?

I guess it says that they're smart, because they're still gonna rake in tons of cash anyway. Good job Toei! You play the game that well, hey maybe you deserve to win.

THANK YOU for saying everything I've wanted to say in a more clear and concise manner.

I'm on my phone so I'm going to be lazy and just say that I agree with all of this. Tbh, I think a lot of the reason that people will defend this to hell and back is because they're so super invested in it and take any criticism as a slight against them. For all the complaints about people who didn't care for it having nostalgia goggles, the other side has them as well.

And remember when people said the bimonthly release schedule would give Toei more time to animate and put effort into it? Or that the episodes would be longer because of it? Well, they were wrong on both counts.

Oh I'm convinced the people with the nostalgia goggles are the ones defending it to the end.

MUST KEEP MEMORIES INTACT. MUST NOT CHANGE CHILDHOOD FEEEEEEEEEEEEEEELS.

Re: I didn't even watch Sailor Moon as a kid.

Exactly. It seems people think that looking at it without those nostalgia goggles will ruin any enjoyment they had or will get out of it. Which I can understand to a point. But to defend Toei's shoddy animation and how cheap they're being with it? I don't understand that. At all.

You are trying way too hard.

Fuck I hate anime snobs.

Re: I didn't even watch Sailor Moon as a kid.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-08 10:56 am (UTC)(link)
She gave a detailed and perfectly reasonable response for why she isn't all that enthused for the new series. This valid criticism constantly being waved off as "baaawwwww you're trying too hard anime snobs muh new series is best pls cum on my face Toei!" by mindless, knee-jerking assholes like yourself is just the definition of obnoxious.

Re: I didn't even watch Sailor Moon as a kid.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-08 11:33 am (UTC)(link)
No one's saying she isn't allowed to not be enthused. If she thinks Toei was twiddling their thumbs or cutting corners and the delays don't justify the end product, that's her opinion.

It's the attitude OMG SOMETHING MUST BE WRONG WITH YOUUUUU IF YOU DAAAAAAARE TO LIKE A PRODUCT THAT SHE ISN'T PERSONALLY SATISFIED WITH, YOU'RE JUST PRETENDING TO BE A GOOD FAN BY TOTALLY LOWERING YOUR EXPECTATIONS AND YOU SHOULD HAAAAAATE IT AS MUCH AS SHE DOES which is getting her labeled as a snob.

Is it so hard to believe people are genuinely enjoying the reboot?

Hate the new series all you want. Leave other people out of it.

Re: I didn't even watch Sailor Moon as a kid.

[personal profile] scrubber 2014-07-08 10:30 pm (UTC)(link)
I didn't bring anyone into it man. You're the one taking things personally if you somehow came away with the impression that there's something "wrong with you", or that you're pretending to be a good fan or whatever. I never said any of that. I suspect you know that, or you wouldn't have said "attitude" which is basically you crying about what you imagine the intent behind my words is. You want me to insult people who like Crystal so that calling me a snob feels justified.

I really don't get why people think they are doing themselves any favors by defending sub-par work under the guise of being a "good fan" or supportive or whatever. If you love something don't you want it to be as good as possible? Can you really look at Crystal and say "yep, they definitely did their best, no laziness here".

The point of what I said was this: the people who defend Crystal and pretend it's perfect are sending the message that they are okay with sloppy work. There is a certain amount of objectivity here, animation can be evaluated on that level, it's not like oh say, the art design. The animation in Crystal is medium to low quality. Obviously the politics behind that decision can only be speculated upon, but to me the writing is on the wall. Toei doesn't care about you or little girls, they just want your money. If you're enjoyment of Crystal is so complete that you don't care about any of this, you just want to watch the show... I don't give a shit.

[personal profile] otakugal15 2014-07-08 11:04 pm (UTC)(link)
And that's where me and many others disagree with you. Its not sloppy work. It was animated smoothly and after watching a few episodes of the old anime? This one is sloppy? The first anime was sloppy as shit. The best animated season didn't even come until season 5.

People have differing views on what is considered sloppy. Sailor Moon Crystal is not one of those compared to the old one. But we'll agree to disagree and I'll try to ignore your holier than thou attitude with regards to it.

Didn't watch the old one. Not comparing them. Don't care.

Your insistence on my holier-than-thou attitude is projection. But okay, we can disagree.

And several smaller studios are putting out work this season that have much higher quality animation than Fat Cat Studio Toei, and if you don't find that telling then I guess I have nothing more to say to you.

Sorry, I don't obsessively watch animu anymore. And I've seen some of those so-called better animated shows. Yawn. I've seen better.

Re: I didn't even watch Sailor Moon as a kid.

Oh yes I did!! When I was 15-16.

Hence the 15 in my screen name. Hence me being lazy as fuck about changing my handle cause quite frankly, I don't feel like changing it.

*claps*

Hope you didn't strain any leg muscles trying to backpedal there. Yes, you did bring people into it. If you didn't, you wouldn't have mentioned anyone at all. You would have focused on the quality of the anime, instead of questioning the validity of people's tastes. I have no desire to see you or anyone insult Crystal fans. But that's exactly what you did, and now you're lying about it.

You brought people into it. But saying shit like that. So yes, you did bring them in.

Get off your fucking high horse.

No she wasn't. When you make a miles long rant about something like that and constantly have the attitude she's displayed ever since the first design came out? She's a try hard snob.

I can't take her seriously.
