I'm not even sure it counts as a magical girl anime. It uses magical girls, but I don't think it belongs to the magical girls genre. Princess Tutu was more of a deconstruction of the genre that Madoka was.

I once saw a review of the series that said the creator did not consider it a subversion or deconstruction of magical girls, only that the way it went seemed like the sensible way for it to go.

Saw that review, I thought he said he wasn't "trying to make" a deconstruction, only that he was trying to tell an interesting story. Minor, minor difference, but I guess it means that he could have looked back on it and thought, "Huh, yeah, I guess I did that, didn't I?"

It's not surprising at all, seeing as a lot of his earlier work was like this.
