I get you, OP.

I get you.

Wise choice, OP. I'm a little over halfway through the final season, and it's painful to watch. Not in that agonizingly good way, either. I'm quite disappointed. If things aren't improved by the end of the final ep, I'm going to try to overlook this season, personally.

To be fair, I do like a few things. Not all the characters are acting like idiots. A couple have even improved. And according to Wiki, the newspaper room scenes are extremely accurate to what happens in newspaper rooms IRL. It gives an interesting glimpse into that high-pressure career.

As someone who used to be a newspaper reporter, I can confirm that the newspaper storyline in season five is so true to life that I had flashbacks. Hell, at one newspaper where I worked, I even had the plagiarist/fantasist co-worker that no one could prove was making shit up (he was found out after I left that particular paper and was fired). And this was a mid-size newspaper and not a huge state-level newspaper like the Baltimore Sun.

The newspaper portion of season five is the reason why I can't completely pretend season five doesn't exist the way other people do. It's also the season I have a hardest time bringing myself to re-watch because the newspaper storyline just makes me so angry.

Ooh, thanks for the confirmation on the newspaper scenes' accuracy. How very interesting that the show's writers got it so right! I know *I* wouldn't do well in that type of work environment, you have my respect! :D

Now I want to re-watch all the newspaper scenes from the start of the season, to fully appreciate them. I'm sure I missed something, since for most of the first half I was in denial about everything else going on with the characters. Argh.

nayrt - They really ought to get it right, the show creator was on the Baltimore Sun staff for twelve years. I wouldn't be surprised if he's using material directly from his own work experience!

David Simon says on the DVD commentaries for season five that a lot of the scenes were directly lifted from his time near the end of his employment at the Baltimore Sun.

In fact, he wrote Homicide: A Year on the Killing Streets while working as the crime beat reporter for the Sun. When the Sun decided to buy him out in lieu of laying him off, Simon took the buyout and went to work as a writer on Homicide: Life on the Streets, the television series that was based on his book.

The rest is history.

I thought the last season was horrible. Wish I hadn't watched it at all.

This is me with Burn Notice.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-08 11:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Ah, but with Burn Notice, there was closure for all the characters--well, mostly. Sam and Jesse were apparently going to continue Michael's do-gooder work, but that's a sort of closure.

I haven't watched the second half of the last season because I read my favourite character was going to die and I just can't.

I know who you mean. That was my own fave character, too. T.T I was spoiled for the death--with clips and discussion and everything--in a documentary on the new age of TV I'd watched on Netflix. I still winced and almost cried when it happened. If I hadn't been prepared, I'd have been devastated. (Avoiding names and pronouns JIC the OP doesn't know and is reading all the comments.)

Why do I have the feeling it's a painful death? T_T

It IS painful, for us. Our fave character had no idea it was coming. At least they didn't suffer in agony. T.T

I think it's so powerful to us for two reasons. First, we have no idea it's coming. No foreshadowing, no ominous music, it's just la la la things are normal and then BOOM. (If you've seen the first season of Supernatural, it's just as shocking as the final scene in the season finale.) Second is the circumstances. The murderer and the reason for it are just...buh? WHY?!?!?!!!?!1ioajsd;laksjd;

Normally I HATE spoilers and avoid them whenever possible, but this is one of the very few instances when I was glad to know it was coming. If I hadn't, I'd have been knocked flat in shock and horror, and a sobbing mess for some time after. :|

This is the correct decision.

Also, S5, while still better than most TV, is one of the weaker seasons (FWIW, hated S1, loved 2-4). So you're not missing that much.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-08 11:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Yep. Definitely experienced that before, just with a different series.

I have sort of the opposite problem in that I'm scared to start watching it because I'm worried it won't live up to all the hype and I'll be really disappointed. So there it sits on my Watchlist, taunting me.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-09 10:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Don't worry, it's god tier. Only people with no taste dislike it.

I've attempted to read Moby Dick three times. I always put it down the chapter before my favorite character dies and don't pick it back up.

This was me with Deadwood. :( Took me forever to watch season 3 and goddamnit, I'm still angry over that cliffhanger ending.
