I love that 'pairings other than my OTP' is rated between 'noncon' and 'DEATH'.

To the secret itself, though, I can often track sustained moods by what types of fics I'm reading/writing as well.

That cracked me up too.

Although I should probably feel bad seeing where it is on that depression scale, but holy I can't stop laughing at the idea of some really sad person mindlessly reading fic they're not even interested in or enjoying. It's like barely going through motions, but with fandom hobbies.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-11 07:45 pm (UTC)(link)
I have to admit that it falls in a similar order with me. Sighhhhhhh. I'm terrible.

[identity profile] galerian-ash.livejournal.com 2014-07-10 11:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Aw, you don't like enemy-slash?

For me, it's the other way around when it comes to the stuff I write. I write the fluffiest things when I'm in a bad place, and angst/death/etc. when I'm feeling good.

[personal profile] peablossom 2014-07-10 11:04 pm (UTC)(link)
That's how I am, too.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-10 11:09 pm (UTC)(link)
No, they do like enemy-slash -- when they're depressed!

Going by this scale, I'm super depressed all the time since all I read and write is the type of stuff on the bottom. Enemy slash is fucking awesome though, and pretty much my favorite thing. Give me all the enemies to friends to lovers fic.

[personal profile] solticisekf 2014-07-10 11:20 pm (UTC)(link)
enemy slash is awesome.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-10 11:12 pm (UTC)(link)
mine is pretty much the same except the other way up

OP

Flyby post from OP who has to run afterwards

I think people are misunderstanding slightly. I love each and every one of these genres, I just have to be in the right emotional place to read them, according to my own personal fic/emotion barometer.

I see your hilarious placement of "ships other than my OTP" and your complete "gen? what's gen?" and I diagnose you someone whose romantic life is seriously dissatisfying and lacking, or a member of one of those smugly self-satified couples.

lol I love this secret. I used a similar scale, except "good fic" is at the top and "100k+ shitty slash AU" is at the bottom.

Huh. The only time I'm comfortable with reading really disturbing or sad fics is when I'm happy, and I go straight for the fluff and sweetness and humor and crack when I'm miserable.

Also, I have to be in a very specific mood to have any interest in or appreciation for romance fics, especially those goddamn "long and satisfying friends-to-lovers fics," these last few months. My level of appreciation for romance goes up and down, depending on how romance-oversaturated my current fandoms are. (Theoretically, I really like romance. But some fandoms, man...some fandoms...)

Porn, however, I am in the mood for all the time. ;)

I can sort of see that, OP. I just read more fic in general if I'm not doing great. And my preference goes to angst, then.

I don't really read death fic, though, because my intention is not to get more upset (though I have been known to read fic where I just ignore warnings about content that will emotionally impact me).

As for noncon/dubcon, that's sort of separate for me, because I'm a bit of a pervert and it sort of depends on how it's written, and if I'm in it for the porn or the mental fucked-upness.

[personal profile] cloud_riven 2014-07-10 11:55 pm (UTC)(link)
I was going to say, "Well, at least you can read when your sad." But that's just me being envious for the wrong reasons since I can't enjoy anything when I'm depressed, and not just in a bad mood. (unless you do get some enjoyment or escapism when depressed, in which case here comes my evil envy eyes).

Your barometer makes sense though! When I'm zen as monk shit, I will read all of the sleepy-feeling introspection/meta fic. When I'm anxious, I read a lot of rival shipping. wait i don't wanna track this

I think that's kinda cool! Some people do need second hand ways to tell their moods, and with something like this could be helpful.

At my worst I don't get much enjoyment out of anything and don't even feel like going to the effort to watch tv, play a game, read fic, etc, so I basically sit around being miserable. If I was going to have a list like this though, deathfic would probably be in a similar position because depending on the fandom (if character death is canon then it's fine) I just can't take it or don't want it in normal circumstances. If I was already depressed...eh, why not?

(Anonymous) 2014-07-11 01:21 am (UTC)(link)
That graph look like a penis.

Also, I'm the opposite.
I like masochistic angst when I'm happy, and fluff when I'm sad.
I guess I just like to balance things out.

Other than apocalypse fic, I don't usually have to be in any sort of mood.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-11 03:07 am (UTC)(link)
But, I will say that I'm much more tolerant of grammar/spelling issues or certain types of id fic if I haven't had an irritating or frustrating day.

I just want to know what reading Hunger Games AUs indicate, mood-wise.

(Seriously I have never read or seen Hunger Games why have I read so many AUs WHY AM I CONSIDERING WRITING ONE...)

(I wouldn't without reading/seeing it first, don't worry.)

(I just wish there was a way that didn't involve either Suzanne Collins' prose or the movies' whitewashing and... not-being-finished-yet-ness.)

(Anonymous) 2014-07-11 05:37 am (UTC)(link)
Ah, I know what it's like! I read tons of hurt/comfort (or even just hurt) when I'm feeling low.

This is a really nicely clearly, cleverly designed secret.

All I know is if I'm read Covenant fic with main characters/OC pairings, I've proabably gotta get my shit together, because damn, that's the low point for me. Forget the type of fic, let's talk about the quality OF WHAT someone writes fic ABOUT (quality of fic decreases as the level of attempts to escape from my life increases)
