Oh, I think they were very self-aware and funny. Maybe not all their fans were, but it's kind of ridiculous how much crap they get. Most of it is tired joking about emo kids with funny names or whatever, so much edgier than the people they're making fun of.

It always struck me how goofy and yet utterly sincere the entire band (especially Gerard) came across about their music. Anyone who thinks they're super-emo clearly never watched an interview where Frank and Gerard are basically petting each other and gushing about how awesome everyone is.

I always have and probably will always like MCR and feel no shame for it. The music was catchy and Gerard and the gang seemed like great people. They did have a sense of humor, but I guess most people didn't notice. Ah well.

I just could never stand the way they sound, regardless of intent.

As far as humor goes, I'm way more fond of Voltaire and Alien Sex Fiend.
