Since the secret yesterday, I've been watching episodes of UFO on youtube. I'd completely forgotten what a crush I had on Ed Bishop as Straker. Now that I think of it, it might have had a lot to do with my fondness for white-haired/platinum-blond men on TV -_-;

So far I've watched Sub Smash, Kill Straker!, E.S.P. and Timelash. It's hard to say if Straker is incredibly dedicated and self-sacrificing, or a raging egomaniac, or a really complicated mix of both. It's fantastic. Who the hell deliberately gets themselves assigned to a submarine when they're claustrophobic? Why would you do that?

I've recently seen The Square Triangle, where he takes not only one big risk that results in the death of an innocent and without the reward he planned to get, but also a decision that indirectly kills another innocent. I really like Straker.

It's a saving grace that he's completely and utterly willing to risk himself to exactly the same degree as everyone else (to the point of locking himself in an armoury with a brainwashed man who's been programmed to kill him, in order to save said man), because if he wasn't then his ruthlessness would be incredibly off-putting. The fact that we actually do know it hurts him, and that he does it all anyway, only makes things more complicated.

Of course, he's got charisma by the bucket-load, which helps.

I'd never heard of that show until yesterday's secret, is it any good?

It's fabulous. In both the 'compelling story' sense AND in the 'what the hell are you wearing?!' sense :D Sub Smash is the best episode. I'd forgotten the see-through fishnet tops (female and male) on the submarine uniforms. The storylines are really intense, and I really am remembering how fascinating I found Straker originally.

It is very, very worth a look, if you like extremely morally ambiguous and tense storytelling, and are okay with bizarre 70s ideas of what 80s fashions were going to look like. Personally, I find the latter fascinating in its own way, so the whole thing is awesome to me.

For a visual reference, type in 'UFO Paul Foster' into google images, and scroll through. For some reason this character gets the worst casual wear. The gold shirt and purple jewellery from Ordeal are particularly ... notable.

Also 'UFO submarine' will show you the fishnets, and 'UFO moonbase' will get you the purple wigs and silver space suits used by Moonbase female commanders. It's ... well. It was the 70s?
