Little canon backstories (or future foretellings/implications) that bug you?

(Anonymous) 2014-07-10 11:20 pm (UTC)(link)
For me, it bugs me that Torchwood kind of made atheism canon. I have absolutely nothing against atheism, it would bug me just as much if everyone went to heaven or everyone was reincarnated. I just don't like an afterlife philosophy being spelled out, I guess.

Also, the backstories for the characters we get in season... two, I think don't make sense when you think of who they were when we met them in season one. It felt like serious retconning, honestly.

Hmm, I sort of liked it. In the sense that it was set in a drearier sort of universe that Doctor Who, and the whole "there is no heaven, only darkness" sort of fitted the tragedy of the characters.

I do feel like the characters were retconned, though.

I sort of feel to opposite. It actually really rubbed me the wrong way when Coulson (Agents of SHIELD) told a dying man there was nothing to be afraid of, and that it's beautiful and peaceful on the other side. I know it's meant to be comforting, and that he believed it, but man does it make my skin crawl.

A lot of the Pottermore future tidbits. Didn't like it in the original epilogue and I'm not a fan of it now.

Also some of the extra Gargoyles canon... Not so much that I don't like but that it's completely out there. Like "200 years in the future Xanatos' partially immortal son will get involved in an intergalactic war with an evil alien race" out there.

I didn't mind it in principle because there's plenty of sci-fi/fantasy 'verses where a certain vision of heaven/the afterlife, etc, is canon. But the tone of "lol, idiots, of course atheism is canon always" annoyed the hell out of me. RTD is unbelievably stuck-up about shit like that.

For me, I should probably just say that "The Name of the Doctor" made me drop Doctor Who forever. Yes, I literally mean forever. Never again as long as I live. It's irreversibly tainted for me now and forevermore. *shrugs*

Haven't seen that episode of DW. Why did it make you react that way?

In The Hobbit movies, some of the actors' backstories bother me because they're not true to Tolkien. The one that especially bugs me is the one that Dori, Nori, and Ori are supposed to all have different fathers. No. Tolkien is all about fidelity and one marriage/relationship. If there's more than one relationship for a person it's a big fucking deal. The only race that gets a pass on this is humans and not even all of them either.

I don't know if this counts because it's not really canon but it shows up in fanart CONSTANTLY and it bugs the fuck out of me. Calvin grown up and having kids. Calvin hates girls too much to breed. It doesn't help that his father making his mother go camping when she hates it as much as Calvin does is canon. Apparently she has no say in the matter at all.

Uh...you DO realize that Calvin is a six-year-old boy, right? 80% of six-year-old American boys, especially ones back in the '80s and '90s when the comic strip was running, are convinced that girls are gross. Have you ever even MET a six-year-old boy?

do most six year old boys have fathers that don't let their wives make any decisions about where they go on vacation?
