It's the summer television season. To be honest, not the best shows come out during this season. It's like how the first three months of the year don't have the best movies coming out. Networks save their best stuff for the Fall. Their second best stuff for the Winter. And their "well, we paid for the pilot and ten episodes. Might as well air them" for the Summer.

OP included The 100, though. While not a great show, it ran during the regular TV season and is now on hiatus for the summer.

Also, I've never like the "summer TV" excuse. Most of USA network's shows start as summer only shows and they're really good (mostly).
