tbh I think the days of that style of internet/vlog reviewing are about over, if not nearing a sort of "burn out" phase for both the creators and the viewers. There's too many people out there who have attempted to copy the reviewing styles of the more popular reviewers (ie screaming profanities and accentuating the negative way too much/hard) without even taking the time to consider why those people got popular in the first place. And then they all just kind of blend together in one homogenous mess where no one really stands out anymore, at least, not to the point of the Channel Awesome folks during its zenith period. Strictly imho, of course.

On a somewhat related note, I haven't watched a single video on that site since about 2012, and after recently checking out a couple AT4W (which was the only one I'd bothered with after the NC ended originally), I decided I wasn't missing much. I find Cinemassacre a bit more enjoyable, but that's just me. =V

You actually have a good point. I actually tried to get into it, and I realized a lot of people had already done what I was trying to do.

I do still enjoy good reviews though, so hopefully it doesn't go away completely! But I do think a lot of the people who started have been burnt out. I also think it's common, in general, for humor venues to stop being funny and start being annoying. Even Saturday Night Live isn't that funny anymore.

Hmm. I don't think the video review format will go away entirely. If anything, the Nostalgia Critic/AVGN/Linkara-inspired ways will probably fall out of favor, and then someone else with a new/fresh take on the genre will come along and set the standard for the next 5-6 years.

(I actually forgot to mention, I rather like most of Chad Rocco/CR's videos, even if he makes them very infrequently. They're not perfect, but they're decently made, imho)

And that is true! Comedy tends to change with the times, and what might have been funny then probably might not be a few years later. That said, I do think some of the NC's older episodes kind of hold up to this day, but I don't know if his post-return ones would be the same.

I liked the reviews for the nostalgia and the informative stuff. Now they all do fucking storylines and skits that are boring and unfunny. Hi, I didn't watch your videos to see you put on a mediocre tv show, I want to see a review.

Also, is that a Chiss in your icon?

[personal profile] ex_mek82 2014-07-11 02:53 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I tried watching a post-return NC video once ('Cat in the Hat', I think) and the skits were... yeah, no. I get that he had to make use of the actors/sets from his failed 'Demo Reel' venture, but I feel as though he could have done so in a different way. I ended up bailing out of the review about 3-4 minutes in. =T

Why, yes, it is!

That's basically why I stopped watching his skits. That and his less than great SM review. I just watch Todd on the NChick's new website, instead of TGWTG.

Ha, a Mirialan!

Yeah, the skits and story-lines are unnecessary and usually unfunny. I like the content and respect the PoV of most of the reviewers, but the need to throw in some unrelated sidestory is something I never really got into.

I normally lurk but damn, you nailed it! It's a dying format and so much of it is derivative instead of being entertaining or informative or uplifting or cathartic. It's become more of the angry ranting and less of the wit behind said ranting, I guess.

I still love Todd and Rap Critic (who has the best comic timing on the site, period) but I don't care for TGWTG as a whole anymore.
