Specifically female relative/companion?

Would MY PARENTS/TRIBE/PEOPLE/ARMY BUDDIES ARE DEAAAD count? Or does it have to be gender-related?

I can generally let those slide, because they're less overdone. It's still a fucking shitty character concept, though, no lie.

I don't think it's a shitty character concept, as much as a shitty hero concept. Like, I don't mind them as long as they're not portrayed as a hero or even anti-hero for it- if someone goes vengeance rage about something and starts living only to kill everybody, that's a villain you have there.

I don't mind at all if they're a sympathetic villain protagonist and everything they're doing is rightly portrayed as morally reprehensible and insane, though. I wish more were, with the protag admitting that they've gone evil and are insane enough to be okay and happy with that, instead of entire stories making it out like they're 100% justified and the good guy.

Well the shitty part about it is that the manpain is meant to excuse all of the things they do. They killed his female! That's a moral blank cheque to mow down endless mobs of black people foreigners arabs anyone the author doesn't like. It's lazy writing.

It would be neat to see that character as the villain, and the hero some cop or something that has to stop his vigilante rampage, though. That would be a fantastic trope inversion.

Or he starts off portrayed as the hero protagonist. He's jovial and friendly and everyone likes him. Then slowly, as they get to know him better, people around him realize he's driven solely by a vengeance crusade against the people who killed his entire family when he was eight and they burned in front of his eyes. He doesn't believe in the team's cause, he's only there because they're coincidentally killing the same people he wants to kill, and he'll take any excuse he can to go do that. They call him insane and he laughs it off. The rest of the team reports all this in but the higher-ups refuse to move him, he's too good at killing the enemy. He's goddamn effective, son. Too bad. Then he starts showing no mercy when the team tries to get in his way or stop him from killing helpless civilian bystanders who support the side against theirs, and it dawns on the player that holy fuck they're playing the villain. And that annoying NPC team rival that kept trying to stop you from getting your perfect level scores was the hero all along...

I like it. A more generalized version of Spec Ops: The Line, perhaps, where you can't shrug off the power/violence/murder fantasy as being entirely military.

yesssssss, that is deliciously awesome.

i'd also love to see this trope, but with female characters. that would be a breath of fresh air.
