Empowered female characters who got that way, or stop being that way, because of rape, mental illness or a suicide attempt.

I feel torn on this. I feel it's in a way cheap, but I can sort of relate with the latter two...so hence my dilemma.

oh gosh, i'm so torn on this!

because on the one hand rape as backstory is super cheap and I hate seeing mental illness trivialized. (I also hate the whole "broken bird" female character thing where she was raped and now hates men forever but the hero will fix her with the power of love. ugh)

but on the other hand I LOVE seeing characters overcome hard stuff like that. I love seeing them fight back and kill their inner demons and win. I just find that stuff really motivational.
