Hmm, I've never heard of this period series. Anyone watched it? Any good?

It's called Quirke, and TBH, I found it a little slow. Gabriel Byrne is as good as ever, but the emphasis is more on the atmosphere (1950s Dublin) than the mysteries - which are incredibly slight and predictable.

There's a fair bit of family intrigue as well, but it was a bit too sordid and depressing for my tastes.

However, there are only three episodes, so it's not like it requires too much investment.

Eh, it's sort of mixed. Very atmospheric and great clothes, but the focus is slightly more on the family drama aspect rather than the mysteries themselves. Quirke is a widower, the adopted son of a well known judge. He's got a rocky relationship with his half brother and used to be in love with his half brother's wife (the lady in the top photo) but he actually married her sister. He drinks a lot and is kind of gloomy.
