I'm a fraud

(Anonymous) 2014-07-12 03:05 am (UTC)(link)
I want certain people to like me so badly. So I tie myself in knots trying to be what I think they want. It doesn't work, and I know that, because no one likes a suck up or someone who isn't being genuine. But I'm so afraid, so very afraid, that they will not like the real me. It doesn't make any sense. I have friends that I'm real with. Why should I be something else to these people?

And why do I want them to like me so much? Who cares? I shouldn't try so hard. I should just let things fall as they may.

Why do I do this to myself fs? Why am I a fraud?

It can get really easy to start idolizing people (because people can be really cool), wanting them to like you, and start tripping over yourself and sucking up for that to happen. It makes sense; it's no fun when someone doesn't like them back.

And you're right, nobody likes a suck-up.

You're not a fraud; you're just someone who doesn't want to be disliked, but you gotta risk that if you want anything to happen.

I think it boils down to insecurity, OP. If you felt better about yourself, you probably wouldn't be so worried about other people not liking the real you. I don't think it's about being a fraud; everyone has worries like this at one time or another. But you do need to work on not letting them torpedo your social life via self sabotage.

You do this to yourself because you feel the need to.

That need may stem from personal insecurities, from which, I don't know.

Do you like yourself? Do you think you are good enough? Not just for your friends/acquaintances/strangers, but good enough for you?

If you don't like yourself, work on that first. If it's not an issue of liking yourself, ask what is so great about the people you are trying to impress. Not in an insulting or demeaning way, but is there a reason you are putting them on a pedestal? They are human beings, just like you and your friends. Approach them like a human being, not something to be worshiped or impressed. Don't get too friendly until you've gotten to know them. Just talk to them like you would anyone else you meet.
