It's something you'll have to watch closely, yes, and you'll want to stick to a general guideline of a diet that works for you, but from what you've said you're only slightly diabetic. It's probably not going to be that hard to manage, and from my own experience, if you do make a lifestyle diet change then I'd think it shouldn't actually take too long to get it back into a decent range.
It's scary at first but really, if you're that slightly into it, it oughtn't be difficult to get your sugars down into reasonable ranges, and if you're committed to eating healthy (and the response from your doctor regarding that is promising), it's something that you really do adjust to and it becomes second nature. At least in my case.
Granted, in my case I also wanted to eat healthy but felt I had to eat cheap and didn't deserve healthy food (my partner may have had a conniption when they heard me say this, with several curses towards the people who trained me into feeling that way through guilt trips and gaslighting) - so for me it was possibly less of a big deal than it might be for others.
