Re: Playing "evil" in RPGs

Oh haha my first Skyrim playthrough I was like 100 hours into the game before I finally committed to Stormcloaks or Imperials. I've been told it doesn't matter too much in the endgame, just changes the details of the world. But the Stormcloacks are racist, xenophobic assholes, and the Imperials are oppressive assholes. In the end, my character picked Stormcloaks because she was a Nord, and I realized the Imperials are the ones who almost execute you in the opening scene. My second playthrough was a Dark Elf, and then I realized Ulfric pretty much despised dark elves. He was all like, "I'm going to get rid of all the damn elves in this country! Wanna join the Stormcloaks? :D" and that was when I went Imperial. haha

It's like picking mages or Templars in DA2. You don't really like either side but the game makes you choose anyway. lol I'd seriously pick a more difficult, time consuming third option if it were only available.

It's all about the lesser of two evils. Stormcloaks are racist but like... You can join no matter what race you are so there's implications that it might be able to get better one day.

I'm just caught up on 'YOU CAN'T JUST FORBID PEOPLE FROM WORSHIPING PEOPLE YOU DON'T LIKE.' Which is really weird considering I'm an atheist-leaning agnostic.

Honestly, the whole "WE WANT TO WORSHIP TALOS!" thing just makes me roll my eyes a bit since, not even 200 years before when Skyrim takes place the Nords were actively making fun of the Imperials for worshipping Talos.

...Also, because they don't seem to get that the Empire [from what can be seen] doesn't actually want to ban the worship of Talos - but since it was a choice between "extending the war [and leading to a lot more bloodshed, destruction and death]" or making a peace and banning the worship of a god for a time to appease the other side? I think the Empire made the right call, particularly since they'd been losing badly enough that they most likely wouldn't have won.

...Also because the whole "let anyone join" tactics is pretty common if you look at history and well...It rarely leads to equality for the group being discriminated against, and frequently actually leads to worse discrimination [since they don't need said group's help anymore].

Yeah, see, this is the kind of thing I would know if I a) had played any previous games and b) would stop getting distracted by fifty thousand side quests and go do the main plot.

Eh, the part with the Nords not worshipping Talos probably, yeah. But the history thing is just pattern that happens over and over in history [real world history, but to some extent the game history too, iirc.]

That said, I'm sorry if I came across like I was bashing the stormcloak side? I didn't mean that - just that those were the reasons I generally don't side with them.
