But being able to fly great isn't going to kill the bad guys. Unless the bad gusy are those aliens from Independence Day.

But Falcon's job was never to kill the bad guys. He was USAF Pararescue, which means his job was to jump out a plane, dodge shitloads of gunfire, grab a dying guy, then get him to safety. Shooting bad dudes is not in the job description. Flying like a madman is, and he's pretty damn great at it.

Actually, the ability to fly great, pick people up, and then let them go actually makes you pretty good for taking down enemies that can't fly. But that's barely relevant. Batman has no special powers at all and no one ever says he can't be a superhero. He'll, John Maclane isn't even that impressive, and he still takes out bad guys all the time. There are at least six other people who can do what James Bond does in the exact same universe (double 0's 1-6) and he's still the one we follow, kicking ass and taking names.

It's not solely the physical capabilities that matter

The point of the Avengers isn't just to kill people though, that's why they have a team of people in the first place - not only taking down the enemy but saving people stopping shit blowing up etc etc?

In the comics, the Avengers very rarely kill anybody, for that matter. That's not in their mission parameters.
