Misheard Lyrics

[personal profile] loracarol 2014-07-13 11:24 pm (UTC)(link)
For the longest time I thought that the lyrics to Pompeii were "Hell, I'm gonna be an optimist about this!" not "How am I gonna be an optimist about this", and I thought that it was a super uplifting thing, like, screw the world, I'm still going to be an optimist!

Nope.

Ah well.

Then there was the "Almond Jack"/"Our Man Jack" bit in Nightmare Before Christmas for which I will ever be ashamed.

Anyone else have any misheard lyrics that have stuck out for them?

My sister and I fought for years over whether or not the lyric in 'Sugar We're Going Down' was "loaded god complex" or "loaded gun complex," with me insisting on the stupider option even when shown correct lyrics. Because of course it had to be a gun if it was loaded and they were cocking and pulling it. I did not grasp subtlety and metaphors in high school. I, of course, finally realized I was wrong, but have not yet told her.

That makes sense that you would think that- that was my first thought as well when I listened to the song. :3

Oh.

Really?

But there's cocking and pulling.

Huh.

:(

I listen badly.

There's a song on one station now and I'm pretty sure it's supposed to "I'm going to get better, better, better, better…" But I keep hearing it as as bitter. And yeah, I can sure get bitter all right!

Makes sense. I wonder if that was the songwriter's intention?

Baby when you play with matches
You should know that you're gonna fart
(Something) gonna do it
And I'm coming at you like a pile of carbs

...I still don't know what the actual lyrics are, I'm just gonna assume that my lyrics aren't accurate.

Maybe not, but your lyrics made me giggle. :3

The first time I heard 'March of Mephisto' by Kamelot, there's a line that's sung but sort of muffled. The guy's supposed to be singing: "I speaketh the truth" but I heard: "I'm Sprinkles the clown."
It makes no sense but I still cannot unhear.

Heh, I'm going to have to listen for that next time I listen to that song now! :D

Iron Maidens "Fear of the Duck"
I'd figured out what the line was on the second he said it, but still that first bit was weird.

I had to google that since I don't listen to very much Iron Maiden. I can see why you might get things mixed up. There's a very weird pronunciation for that first line- I heard "dog". |D

In "Gaston" from Beauty and the Beast, I always thought the line "My what a guy, that Gaston" was "I want a guy like Gaston."

So somehow, for over 20 years I didn't think about the actual unlikelihood of a Disney movie having a group of men sing what I thought they were singing.

Now it's going to be my headcanon that that is what they were actually singing. |D

"You know I wish I was Jessie's girl / I wanna be Jessie's girl... How can I be a woman like that?"

From a time in my life I didn't listen very closely to verses.

I've never heard that song, but that's funny. :)

Heh. I've heard many people saying that they suspect this is what the singer really wants to say.

For Big Yellow Taxi, I thought "paved paradise, put up a parking lot" was "gay paradise, put up [with] a fucking life".

The day I learned the real lyrics, the song made so much more sense.

Before I knew the song was called Rumor Has It by Adele, I thought she kept saying "Uma has it." Like, Uma Thurmon.

Yeah. I don't get it either.

I thought it was "Oh I'm gonna be an optimist about this!" Darn.

btw, totally OT: I realized earlier that your user name is a palindrome and I was like "woah that's cool"

When I was a kid, I misheard one of the "but you don't care's" in MMMBop. I thought they were saying "with a donkey," and I was like "this is a really weird song."

"Rock the Casbah." Just the whole song. I keep hearing something about "the sheep" and I'm just so confused.

In the song "Middle of the Road" by the Pretenders, there's a line "I'm standing in the middle of life with my plans behind me" that I always hear as "with my pants behind me." I like my version better tbh.

Panic! at the Disco's "I Write Sins not Tragedies." I swore for a couple years the line was "with a sense of poison rationality," not "poise and rationality."

I still kinda like mine better. :P

In Onward Christian Soldiers the line "Christ the royal master", the word "master" is sung like it has three syllables so when I was a little kid I thought it was "Christ the royal banister"
Give It Away by the Red Hot Chili Peppers "I can't tell if I'm a kingpin or a pauper" got turned into "I can't tell if I'm a penguin or a porpoise"
Staying Alive by the Bee Gees, I don't know what the actual line is but it SOUNDS like they're saying "Beavis says you're freaky and everybody's sneaky" and "we can try, what is that, New York has the baseball games"
