LJ/DW - you can disable comments. Not sure about AO3, but you can restrict them to logged-in users and disable/hide kudos. But yeah, I guess I mean more, you can choose not to be notified/not get emails so then you'd never see them if you didn't check. I don't know about other sites though. I just imagine if comments really annoyed you, there would be a way post without dealing with them. You could always post them on your own website as well. There's that!
