Rules for house guests?

(Anonymous) 2014-07-14 01:04 am (UTC)(link)
I got family coming down to stay with me for 3 weeks. I am not all that thrilled (I love them but there are going to be 4 of them). I have been trying to make some house rules but can't think of any! So I figured yall might know some obvious ones I am forgetting. I got:
-Keep the thermostat at 75 degrees
-Don't eat at the computer
-If not in use, turn it off
-Knock on any closed door before entering the room

Clean up after yourself is a pretty good rule.

The toilet flushes after every use.

You might think that goes without saying, but trust me you need to say it anyway.

Do not leave the television remote (or any remote) on the couch or on an armchair. Again, trust me. You wanna nominate a flat surface to which it is returned after each use, otherwise it will go missing and there will be a fight over it.

Probably a good idea to be explicit about what you want done with dishes after people use them.

Specify if you recycle, and if so how you want that handled.

Food-wise it might not hurt to set up some kind of thing so that if they need or want something special they buy it themselves/maybe they chip in for groceries while they're there [4 people can make your bill skyrocket fast]. At least figure out a way to handle payment for when/if you guys go out to eat.

You might want a rule regarding your room. I know that sounds crazy, but at least with my family people can be very bad about realizing that someone's private room is probably not a place to go uninvited if your a guest.

Ugh food. I am not looking forward to that. : /

And since 2 of them will be staying in my room (the younger kids) I doubt privacy will be a thing while they are here.

They should never be touching the thermostat if they don't live their, holy crap. Do people do this a lot?

"don't eat at the computer", "turn off lights" and "please knock" are totally reasonable, btw. So is asking for them to not make a lot of noise during bedtime or whatever.

They are family, so they just do what they want. Hell, the family I have that lives close by doesn't even knock when they come to visit.

Wow, that's...well, I guess it depends? It could be a real invasion of privacy, but it depends on the vibe with the family, I guess.

I have that problem with family. That is the exact reason I've developed a habit of leaving my doors locked 24/7.

Ahahahahahahahahahaahaahhaaa.

I once dated this guy who thought he was a Highlander and sang Queen in falsetto all the time. These things did not take long to become deal breakers.

Even if it's family, people are going to surprise you with how they behave in a house that isn't theirs. Mostly they won't be pleasant surprises, either. :(

In general, think about rules for:

* cleaning up messes
* food/cooking duties
* bathroom usage -- who showers when, etc.
* household expenses - will they be defraying the cost of the extra water/electricity usage? How about food expenses?
* Decide what is off limits and store it safely away if you can. If you can't, state what's off limits.

You might want to change that no eating rule to include bedrooms as well. For me, the last thing I want is ants or mice in the rooms. But I think the rules generally depend on who is staying. I had some relatives that liked to drink, so we had to have some strict drinking rules. Mostly when it comes to the liquor cabinet. As in, don't touch. I don't smoke, so anyone who smoked had to go outside to do it. I did end up compromising during bad weather that they could smoke in the storage room only if the window was open. I also had a dog at the time who was overweight and on a diet, so there were no feeding table scraps rules. Just whatever you think is intolerable for you and your home and is within reason. Most people seemed to be understanding.
