Here's the thing with me. I tend to really dislike romance novels and films, but in fanfic I seem to be immune to all the clichés and tropes of it. If I already decided I like two characters for other reasons, I'll gobble up romance plots - and yeah, they can wreck me.

This is how I do it too -- I'm not even much of a shipper, but I will still coo over dumb romantic shit in fanfic (and for that matter, in the later seasons of TV shows) that I could never stomach in movies or books where I don't care about the characters before the romance happens.

Agree 100% with this comment.

This is me too.

Pretty much this. I think the difference is that, if I like a ship, I'm probably interested in the characters as individuals and have put a decent amount of thought into them, their relationship, etc. Since romance-genre stuff tends to focus more on them as a couple, I don't really notice as much about them as individuals, and their romance will usually feel forced.

YES.

Exactly.

I like the occasional romcom or romance (and I do mean occasional, as I generally don't watch them) but agreed; if I already like the characters involved, it's typically easier for me to accept the cliches and tropes. (There are still some I hate, but I have an easier time looking past them with fanfic.)

Yeah, this. I consume media for all genres except romance, and then I go to fandom for my romance fix. It works out much better that way.
