Then again, I've long had the impression some anime series out that use Christian religious symbolism -irregardless if it's Protestant or Catholic in origin- solely use it because it "looks cool" without really ever thinking of implications (much in the same way folks in the west use Eastern Religious symbolism for about the same reasons), so I don't think about/dwell on it too much.

Kabbalistic imagery is almost worse, in a way...

Yeah, that's true. IIRC, a Captain Harlock series -Endless Odyssey- got delayed once, because Leiji Matsumoto was outraged that they used the Star of David in a negative context associated with the antagonists (ship design), and demanded they alter/remove it. Ended up causing the show to go from a TV series to an OAV, but Matsumoto made the right call, imho.

The St. Michael in a Shinto shrine really is interesting O: I wonder what the story behind it is.

But I don't really know about the history of that specific statue. It could just be that some Shinto priest was buds with some missionary. I did go on exchange to Japan to a private Christian university for a year that was founded by missionaries, so it's not like that kind of stuff doesn't exist, though more modern Japanese Christians tend to be Protestant, and iirc Protestants don't give many fucks about saints, so that statue strikes me as Catholic... (I dunno, I slept through a lot of church).
