Yeah, I'm gonna have to go with anon.

Then again, I've long had the impression some anime series out that use Christian religious symbolism -irregardless if it's Protestant or Catholic in origin- solely use it because it "looks cool" without really ever thinking of implications (much in the same way folks in the west use Eastern Religious symbolism for about the same reasons), so I don't think about/dwell on it too much.

tI saw tons and tons of crosses in Japan, mostly on people who probably don't have much connection to actual Christianity (if only because Japan doesn't have that many Christians, haha).

Kabbalistic imagery is almost worse, in a way...

This reminds me of a photo a friend/co-worker took while they were visiting friends in Japan last month (they taught English there for about 3 years, just for quick context). It was in a Shinto shrine -I believe-, but in it was a statue of St. Michael the Archangel. That struck us all as odd, but interesting.

Yeah, that's true. IIRC, a Captain Harlock series -Endless Odyssey- got delayed once, because Leiji Matsumoto was outraged that they used the Star of David in a negative context associated with the antagonists (ship design), and demanded they alter/remove it. Ended up causing the show to go from a TV series to an OAV, but Matsumoto made the right call, imho.
Edited (I can't even with phrasing tonight, sorry.) 2014-07-16 00:09 (UTC)

I hadn't heard of that, but it's nice to know! Mega appreciation for Leiji Matsumoto going on here...

The St. Michael in a Shinto shrine really is interesting O: I wonder what the story behind it is.

I suspect it might have something to do with Hidden Christians:

But I don't really know about the history of that specific statue. It could just be that some Shinto priest was buds with some missionary. I did go on exchange to Japan to a private Christian university for a year that was founded by missionaries, so it's not like that kind of stuff doesn't exist, though more modern Japanese Christians tend to be Protestant, and iirc Protestants don't give many fucks about saints, so that statue strikes me as Catholic... (I dunno, I slept through a lot of church).

Yes, and I love that they do.
